A place that means something to you, and the two or three real expressions that happen in between the posed ones.

From a recent session

Two people who forgot the camera was there.

On the approach
Most portrait sessions ask you to hold still and perform a version of yourself. I'd rather give you something to do: walk, talk, forget the camera is there, and catch what happens while you're not posing for it.
Before the shoot
A short call or email: who's in the frame, what the photos are for, and the feeling you want them to hold onto.
A place that means something to you, scouted for light, not a generic backdrop, somewhere the session actually belongs.
A small board of reference (light, colour, wardrobe) so we're aligned before anyone steps in front of the camera.
